The following article is from AOL's Diet and Fitness page today:
Just when you thought it was safe to bite into that bagel, now comes word that high-protein diets combined with regular exercise can help you lose weight. In a study of obese women who exercised and ate a low-calorie diet, those who ate more protein lost more fat (and less muscle) than those who stuck with a high-carb regimen. And much of the fat lost was in the abdominals.
Lose the Fat, Not the Muscle
A protein-rich diet and exercise "work together to correct body composition," says Donald Layman, PhD, a University of Illinois nutrition professor. "Dieters lose more weight, and they lose fat, not muscle." But the real key to dropping weight without losing muscle appears to be exercise. All study participants did five 30-minute walking sessions per week, with one group also lifting weights twice a week. Again, the results showed those who ate a high-protein diet and exercised more lost pounds but retained muscle.
Researchers claim a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet offers a metabolic advantage over the opposite kind of eating. While it would be very difficult to forgo all carbohydrates in favor of an all-protein menu, it's possible to adopt a more protein-centric diet while aiming to exercise five out of seven days per week. The key to lasting weight loss does involve keeping your metabolism revved and choosing foods in moderation. But a radical rejection of an entire food group is not only unrealistic, it's unhealthy.
[Gee! All I can say is DUH! Some of us have known all this stuff all along!]
