Find Your Target Heart Rate
To get maximum benefite from your aerobic activity, work out in your target heart rate zone. simply subtract your age from220 to get your maximum heart rate, and then take 60% and 70% of that number.
(200 - your age) x .60 = lower end of your zone
(220 - your age) x .70 = higher end of your zone
People who are very fit can go higher, up to 85% of maximum. To monitor your heart rate, take your pulse while exercising or use a heart rate monitor.
You can also monitor you exercise intensity by simply paying attention to how you feel. You should be breathing heavely but not gasping for air, and you should be able to talk in shout sentences but not sing an aria.
