My 25th b day is just weeks away and like the birthday before I'm sorely disappointed in myself for still being overweight, no pity party though. I've done Atkins before w/o support, in fact more ridicule than anything, I lost some weight, but like any overeater I found my way back to the junk food and zero restrictions of what and how much to eat. I know atkins will work, just like all other diets work, as long as you commit and actually do it. The only reason this or that failed in the past was because no matter what diet I'm on I have to limit something or completely cut out something, and my little brain with all those bad habits built up over the years just doesn't like that...so here I am, exposing it all in hopes that documenting publicly will hold me more accountable to myself and to my goals than i've been thus far. And I can't tell you how desperately frustrated I am with always starting Day 1 on my diet, and always giving into my cravings by the end of the day! And then day 1 starts the next day, again...I've had so many day 1's I feel like I'm living my very own groundhog day. But I digress, I am here because I'm ready! I know this diet works, and I really hesitate to call it a diet because once u get the hang of it it's like "really? I get to eat this that and the other and lose weight? That's awesome"...but I'll tell u what, I never want cake more than when I can't
eat it, as it usually goes. I also have a bit of a unique situation, I was on Paxil for about 6
months and gained 50 pounds on top of an already overweight body, apparently "Paxil packs it
on", something my doctor failed to mention (goodbye money into the pockets of big pharma,
hello more mid section blubber) but anyway, I've been off of it for almost a year and I swear I
have a harder time losing weight now. I still lose when I'm dieting, but it doesn't seem to go
as fast...of course, age could be a factor as well, and that's why I like Atkins, the weight loss
is intense and results are fast, which is always a good incentive--my metabolism needs a super
charge and this and exercise should do the trick, however, like I said, my hardest times are at
the end of the day when I want to cave and usually let myself---so I will need support on
that! I just need to get through the 1st week, and this coming weekend, prove to myself that I can make it through the hardest part of sugar withdrawal and the evening time/weekend attitude of limitless eating, and then I'll know I can follow this through. So I'll be back on tonight to read my post to remind myself of what I intend for myself and to not feel defeated from being tired, stressed, and/or frustrated from work and everyday occurrences (why do people drive like such A holes after 6:00?), and I hope to find some encouraging words from you all, I love to hear about successes so far and tips! Here's to success...

I wish you great, great success, and you CAN have it. At your age, weight loss should come pretty quickly and easily if you truly follow the plan as it was designed. My advice:

1. Focus on the delicious things you CAN have. Don't waste your time thinking about what you can't--there is SO much you can.

2. Plan, plan, plan! Plan ahead--always have food that you like available--in my earliest days, I'd roll up deli beef or no-sugar ham with cream cheese inside and cut it into pinwheels so I could have finger food to snack on, or I'd microwave some bacon, or dunk celery sticks in some cream cheese or sour cream based dip. When your appetite goes away, and it will, you won't need snacks any more.

3. If people bug you about your eating, tell them "I'm pre-diabetic, so I have to restrict sugar." That'll shut 'em up. (It won't be a lie, because EVERYONE who eats the Standard American Diet is pre-diabetic.)

4. Remember that you CAN eat out with friends and family--it's the easiest thing in the world to order a hamburger and tell them "no bun, I just want the burger and the toppings on a plate." And virtually everywhere has a salad with some kind of chicken, cheese or other protein on it. If you're leery of the dressings, ask for the oil and vinegar cruets, although blue cheese and other creamy dressings are nearly always ok.

5. Keep your two week induction honest and true. Don't cheat, or push the boundaries. That's where you lose your appetite and gain the energy and enthusiasm you need to keep you going afterward, plus the losses can be HUGE if you really do it by the book.

Funny, I just gave the same "diabetic diet" advice on the other thread :) Trust me, everyone will praise your efforts then rather than criticize the "Atkins" diet.

Haha, Jen, I just saw that! Isn't it funny how if you use the "d word, your horribly "unhealthy" Atkins diet suddenly becomes the best diet on earth? Sheesh...

Geez, I wish I knew how to get this porn ad off of my post, no wonder only a few people responded lol. Jessica, thanks! That's so helpful and I appreciate it. Actually a good friend of mine, well used to be, now she's married and I'm not in the club, but she lost a ton of weight on atkins and I lost weight a while ago doing it,but recieved all the greif in the world, so hopefully this time around people will be more understanding seeing how good she looks. Actually when I was on Atkins a couple of years ago someone actually said to me "watch out about gaining it back, that's how those fad diets work." which a) just be happy for me and b) what people who aren't overweight don't understand is that I could of lost weight doing weight watchers, counting calories, or doing shakes, and I still would gain the 15 pounds back if I let myself. Losing it isn't the final factor, it's keeping it off and not falling back into bad bad habits. Well, I have today off of work so I'm gonna go stock up and be prepared for the weekend ahead. Question: diet soda- ive read to drink soda with splenda or that sucrolose word but I swear every diet soda has aspartame I've read like every label, so I got diet 7 up which I'm pretty sure is low in caff if not caff free (could be wrong about that) but I don't want to blow it by having a glass or two of diet soda at the end of the day when my sweet tooth is craving, so what's ur experience with that? And Atkins bars for induction, yay or nay? I'm reading mixes reviews, thanks!

Personally, and this is just ME speaking and I'm no dietician or doctor, but I don't believe you need to give up either caffeine or diet soda in order to lose the weight.

The only issue Dr. A had with aspartame was its health problems. He never said that it interferes with weight loss. In me, it definitely causes gas and bloating, but I still have a coke zero every day or two because I really like it!

As far as caffeine goes, all of the current research indicates that it stimulates the metabolism and can actually aid weight loss. I think that for some people, their coffee is a vehicle through which they take in extra calories and carbs (both cream and those little Splenda packets contain a few), and for some folks it seems to be an appetite stimulant. But I've done Atkins with and without caffeine, and haven't noticed any difference.

Like you, I've used coconut oil in my coffee and felt like that really revved up my metabolic rate. I gave it up when I stalled, but it didn't seem to make any difference. Think I'll add it back in!
