Today is my 5th day on Atkins and I have lost 3 lbs. but I tested my urine with a Ketostix and it's negative for ketsosis.

How long does it usually take?

Since the body can only store a two-day supply of glucose in the form of glycogen when consuming 20 grams of carbs a day, it normally takes two to three days for your body to go into Ketosis. If you are past the two or three days, and still not in Ketosis, check more closely the number of carbohydrates you are eating. You may be eating more carbs than you think. Another thing to consider is that the testing sticks do expire. Check the date to make sure you have a fresh pack.
You've already lost 3 lbs which is something to celebrate!

A more accurate indicator of ketosis is the smelly breath, a metallic taste in your mouth. The indicator strips are not always accurate and may be affected by the amount of water you have had to drink and the amount of fat you have eaten.

I think ketosis strips can be helpful if you're not seeing other indications that the diet is working for you--kind of for an extra vote of confidence, so to speak.

But I personally have never used them--I can FEEL when I'm in ketosis, and I think you will be able to also, once you've gotten some experience with this eating plan!

Yes, I get that metalic thing going in my mouth too. Very weird.

I am planning on doing this then it depends on how much I am looking to lose as in fat/weight. You would do the CKD for 2 weeks then carb-up on that weekend. Myself I will carb up for 10 hrs when I hit the 2 weeks because I want to lose 60 pounds. CKD is good from what I understand because you do not lose whatever muscle you have because you are throwing your body in to ketosis and that puts your body into a using fat versus carbs for energy. I have started this diet and have already seen 10 pounds down, now take into fact that most of this is probably water weight it is nice to see it go. The way you would work the CKD is all dependent on your body also. What should your calorie intake be? Take that, then 65% of the intake should be fat, 35% should be protein and 5% carbs / 30 carbs a day being the max.

I have been restricting carbs for 25 days. I'm very happy that 10 lbs. has come off and I'm not always hungry. Keto sticks show me fluctuating between negative and trace amounts of ketone. I am redoubling my efforts today, only meat, cheese, and eggs to see if I can get ketosis going. A friend says he can get the test to a purple (max.) result in 2 days with meat, cheese, and eggs. The 10 lbs. came off pretty quick but I'm stuck here. Wish me well!
